Nau Mai
Fairness for all
Back in May 2023, new legislation came into force which gave the Ombudsman new powers and responsibilities to look at complaints and investigate concerns raised by children and young people in the care of Oranga Tamariki and its care or custody providers.
The Ombudsman wanted to make sure it was as clear and as easy as possible for tamariki to get in touch and find information and had research done to learn what would work best. What they heard from tamariki kickstarted the idea and process for the new website ‘Nau Mai’.

ABOUT THE PROJECT
This website needed to stand separately from the main Ombudsman website which caters to all public, and be specifically developed for children and young people to allow them to voice concerns about their experiences. The website would need to be a safe space for tamariki and rangatahi in the care system, with child-friendly content and design.
In February 2024, https://nau-mai.nz/ was signed off by the Chief Ombudsman and went live.

WHAT WE DID
With short and digestible content, colourful and soft illustrations, Nau Mai met the design brief. Functionally, it caters for speakers of both English and Te Reo Māori via a language switcher. There’s also a short online form, a text call back, 0800 number, and email options; catering to all levels of technical ability and communication preferences. Most importantly, user testing has shown high satisfaction from tamariki and rangatahi and overall young people have had positive emotional responses to the website, with most saying they feel ‘confident’, ‘happy’, ‘informed’, or ‘empowered’.
