Back-end PHP or Drupal Developer

Sparks Interactive is part of the open source and Drupal communities in New Zealand with offices in Auckland and Wellington. Our staff designs, develops, and supports small to enterprise size websites across both the public and private sectors, and we are looking for a LAMP developer to join our team in Wellington - experience in Drupal is not mandatory but a definite plus. 

You'll be working with large scale site development and migrations, API and external app integrations. Be warned, this is not your grandparents Drupal!

Building on the foundations of a mature codebase and long-standing well-managed open source project, our work is at the leading edge of CMS and Digital Experience Platform development. We are committed to progressive practices and there is considerable scope to "choose your own path" in terms of career development and direction. If you're increasing in working across the stack we have considerable appetite for javascript framework skills such as React.



Desired skills and experience

This job will suit candidates set for a career in open source technologies who are ready for a challenge. You'll work alongside senior staff in an established team environment with a high degree of autonomy and responsibility.

You will have coding experience in MySQL and PHP, as well as an understanding of the software development lifecycle through requirements, design, development and testing. Ideally you will be familiar with Symfony and Drupal 8/9 and have heard the words Composer, Drush, Git, Twig. Experience with supporting front-end for responsive websites, and/or decoupled builds using Gatsby and React would be the icing on the cake.

We do not keep our developers in the basement - the ability to work in a cross-disciplinary team and solid communication skills are important. We are committed to providing excellent customer service and outstanding project delivery - accurate and constructive communication skills are crucial. These include appropriate use of email, messaging, and managing meeting time to achieve positive outcomes, as well as thoroughness in discussing and documenting requirements, discussions and outcomes.



This is unlikely to be a graduate or early-career role, but if you feel you have exceptional technical skills and are looking to develop your communication and leadership then please get in touch.

Generally our salaries generally sit within the following ranges:

$50,000 - $60,000 full time : graduate or trainee role with less than 2 years track record

$60,000 - $70,000 full time : proven ability to deliver consistent commercial results in your chosen field

$70,000 - $80,000 full time : you are a reliable go-to for pressure work, your efforts uplift those around you

$80,000 - $95,000 full time : you lead and direct, and take responsibility for overall project outcomes

$95,000 and upwards : a significant track record of achievements, people are at their best when they work with you
